The word 'dildo' (as well as its function) comes from the latin word, 'dilettare'=refresh. In earlier times, dildos were used in sex education. The first time should not be painful but, rather, pleasurable. Dildos are also useful during the process of giving birth: they help the vagina to dilate. Dildos do not vibrate by itself. Some have an extra space for a vibrating egg or ball and may thus be turned into a vibrator. Dildos with an added base are pleasant to handle or may be slipped into a belt.
