The first patent for a sex-harness was issued in 1952. The apparatus was designed to prevent a couple from whirling off the bed when having sex. A long strap was placed around the hip of the person in front, whilst a stirrup hung on the rear side of the harness fell to ankle height. The person to the rear positioned him- or herself between the legs of the person in front and used the stirrup to remain stable.
